Clearing the Confusion on Dark Web and Deep Web

By: Yzabella

There are again a lot of users who seem confused between the two terminologies stated on the title. It is normal though to ask but it is not if you let your arrogrance feed you towards this matter, you know simple terms and lazy to look up.

"Does the deep web and dark web same or not?"
The question also I asked back when I am too young to such terms but I hope I will clear this question at once. Let us start with DEEP WEB.

What is it anyway and many are so interested or not? Deep Web is a term that covers everything you do on the internet privately. This includes your long good morning messages to your partner or your chat calls from your relatives away from the country, your bank transactions, your emails and passwords and many more that requires privacy. Hiding your posts to public or setting the privacy to "ONLY ME" here in facebook is deep web already or if you have groups, setting it to Secret or Closed is deep web also, as no one will see it except yourself unless someone just exploited you and found out those stuffs.

Deep Web are parts of the World Wide Web that are not indexed by search engines such as Google or Bing. It was Michael K. Bergman who coined the term as "SEARCH INDEXING" term in 2001.

Then what is Dark Web?

It is a content of the World Wide Web that can be found on overlay networks and darknet, it requires special tools for you have access it such as Tor. Dark Web forms a small content on deep web as these contents are not indexed as well which started the confusion. It is the haven of the darkest, notorious and brutal activities on the internet which became popular with many creepypastas and stories roamed around to scare. (Of course best way to scare child is some dark stuffs but in reality it is not.)

Darknets or anonymity networks consists of many small peer to peer or friend to friend networks and large networks such as Tor, ZeroNet, I2P and many more.

The rise of the term Dark Web started after the takedown of SilkRoad to classify among other web contents.

In addition also, there are many websites who can be found on clearnet but search engines can't search it for a reason that a robot exclusion standard or protocol is present on the said website. It might be the whole website or just the private information. If you knew the term "Google Dorking", it is a method of hackers to harvest scripts needed for their attacks and basically that is a way to bypass Deep Web itself. I myself also using such method to search some books, movies or photos instantly instead of searching for how many minutes.

The Dark Web much more synonymous to Darknet as I said, darknet requires tools or softwares to access it and as of now many hidden services of dark web are using the darknet technology.

There are a lot of methods used to index your web contents and one of those is the private web which you shall require registration and log in. Robot exclusion protocol is another thing also and Web Archives, hard to believe but yes it is indeed a way to index a website.

The confusion started as dark web follows privacy also, of course criminals want security as well away from cops and they used the idea of deep web to hide but I have to tell these two are way different than you think.

To sum it up on this content:

Deep Web is everywhere, you are using it everyday. Just some privacy needed while dark web is all about illegal stuffs and more synonymous to darknet than deep web.

Still confused?
